Captain Phil.

I am saddened to hear that Captain Phil Harris (Discovery’s Deadliest Catch) of the Cornelia Maria died recently of a massive stroke.  He was fun to watch and died way too young.

I can’t say that I am surprised though.  From what I saw, he was overweight and lived a very stressful and unhealthy life; which included chain smoking, living off energy drinks, consuming probably more alcohol than healthy, and days without sleep.  A couple of years back on the show he had a serious blood clot.  I had hoped that would be the wake up call he needed to make some lifestyle changes.

In an interview posted on his official website,  Captain Phil was asked, “What do you picture yourself doing in 5 years?” And he responded “Hopefully I’ll have the freedom to choose what I want to do.  I still want to do a little fishing, ride around the U.S. on my bike, just enjoy life.”

This reminds me of how unhealthy my life was not too long ago.  If I wouldn’t have chosen life and made some necessary changes I would be in the same place Captain Phil is much sooner than later.  I know some folks say well you’re going to die anyway so who cares?  Well I care now.  I wasn’t really living or happy before and was very unhealthy and depressed. Now I take care of my body and mind and I am the happiest I’ve ever been.

“You don’t get to choose how you’re going to die or when. You can only decided how you’re going to live now.”  Joan Baez
